Master Gardeners conduct classes in April

LAS VEGAS, Nev. - University of Nevada Cooperative Extension Master Gardeners—for the 9th year--will offer a series of free classes at Acacia Park in April. Classes are offered in partnership with the City of Henderson Parks and Recreation Department, and are published in “Henderson Happenings.” All classes will be taught by Master Gardener instructors and begin at 9 a.m.

On April 5, Master Gardener Denise McConnell will present Landscape Design with Native Plants in Mind. The most successful and water wise landscapes incorporate native and adaptable plants.  Get to know the best of them and how to use them in your yard. Some landscape design and basic layout designs will be discussed. A certified southern Nevada Cooperative Extension Master Gardener will also tour the demonstration garden for examples.  Com with your questions and be ready for some very creative ideas.

On April 12, Trees, Trees and more Trees will be presented by Master Gardener Jeneane Young. Trees make up the structure of your landscape design, are beautiful, provide shade for those hot summer months, allow birds and wildlife a habitat, and may also provide edible fruit. Yes you can grow fruit trees here in the desert. Join a Cooperative Extension Master Gardener to discuss which trees are recommended for this area, when to plant, irrigation, fertilization, pruning, how to keep them manageable, and prevention of problems.

Join Master Gardener Linda McDonald on April 19 for Choosing Plants (Vegetable, Fruit Trees, Herbs). Ever wonder why some gardens flourish and other just get by?  Well it starts with choosing varieties of plants that do well in our native soil, getting healthy starts, knowing how to care for the plants in our gardens as they mature. When to grow what plants can make all the difference.  Come and join Cooperative Extension Master Gardeners as they share their wealth of knowledge on this subject.

On April 26, Let it Rot, Composting 101 will be presented by Master Gardener Pam Bridges. Composting is possible in a desert environment. There are ways to manage your compost safely and efficiently. Learn the basics of composting from certified Cooperative Extension Master Gardeners for your backyard. This is a great way to use kitchen and yard waste as a free family project and good for your garden as well.

The Master Gardeners will have an “Ask a Master Gardener” table at the Park on class days. Acacia Park is located at 50 Casa Del Fuego (Intersection of 215 & 515) in Henderson, Nev.  Master Gardener volunteers are also available to answer questions through the Home Gardening Help Line, 257-5587. The Help Line is staffed Monday-Friday from 8 a.m. -5 p.m.
