The first topic discussed at the Substance Abuse Committee Meeting was the need for Al-Anon meetings within the reservations. The Al-Anon Family Groups are a fellowship of relatives and friends of alcoholics who share their experience, strength and hope in order to solve their common problems. The only requirement for membership is that there is a problem of alcoholism in a relative or friend.
Chairman Mark Romero, Eric la Cappa, and I will be attending the 45th Annual Southwestern School for Behavioral Health Studies, Arizona’s largest and oldest Mental/Behavioral Health Conference, held at Loews Ventana Canyon in Tucson, Arizona.
The theme for this 5-day Conference (August 18-22, 2013) is “Embracing Recovery and Wellness - Where Hope Stems From Within” and features nationally known speakers and faculty, addressing a wide range of topics and issues relevant to behavioral/mental health, child welfare, addictions, and prevention.
On Saturday July 13, 2013 at the Sycuan Pow-Wow grounds from 10:00am until 4:00 pm the 3rd Annual All Tribes in Recovery Gathering took place. The event had Guest speakers, Raffles, Food Booths, and Resources. Chairman Romero was a guest speaker who shared his experience, strength, and hope with the audience.
The Committee also discussed the possibility of Eddie Grajalva LISAC,CRSS giving a presentation for the Chairman at the retreat in early November in Las Vegas. The topic of the presentation would be Implementing a Trauma Informed System of Care for Native Americans.
Sarah Hernandez, Chairwoman for Natives in Recovery Campout will be giving a brief presentation for the upcoming event in September 6-8 at the Viejas Reservation campgrounds
