Washington, D.C. - Nevada Senator Harry Reid released the following statement after the Supreme Court of the United States issued a 5-3 ruling in Whole Woman’s Health v. Hellerstedt striking down a Texas law designed to restrict women’s access to reproductive health care:
“Today, the Supreme Court affirmed women’s constitutionally protected rights. This ruling is a victory for women all over America.
“Even without its full roster of nine justices, the court clearly saw through the sham law enacted by the state of Texas solely to limit women’s rights and restrict access to health care. With this discriminatory law struck down, clinics in Texas continue providing vital health care services to women. Sadly, the state of Texas has demonstrated a pattern of attempting to strip its citizens of their constitutional rights. Texas has pushed laws to restrict people’s right to vote, limit victims’ ability to recover much-deserved damages after accidents, and this law was no different.
“The Supreme Court rightly struck down this harmful, unconstitutional law. Today’s ruling is a much-needed blow to Texas’ efforts to unconstitutionally restrict women’s right to access care.”
