Inter-Tribal Council of California, Inc., is proud to announce the Nils E. Hasselberg Indian Scholarship in memory of Nils E. Hasselberg. This Scholarship was established to assist American Indian students attending a college or university in the State of California.
It is the conviction of the donor that a proper education should be an influence in developing sensitivity to the needs of society. Therefore, the scholarship prefers a student with a ... (direct quote from his will) "rounded capacity for life to one whose only view of humanity is gained as he or she passes from one library to another".
Consideration to Scholarship applicants is one whose personal and academic history shows initiative, motivation and good citizenship. This must be exemplified by active participation in public interest activities as well as the desire to serve others upon graduation. The candidate's record should show participation in organization/programs that study and contribute to the solution of a broad range of humanistic problems. Consideration will be given to applicants who have demonstrated qualities of leadership, who are inquisitive, and concerned about the work around them. Supportive data will be required to verify the actual involvement in human services via the application and official transcripts.
The Scholarship is designed solely for worthy and needy students of American Indian descent. It will provide financial support to deserving students in Higher Education. The donor hopes the financial support from the Scholarship will afford the recipient the opportunity outside his or her studies for free inquire activity area of his or her interest related to the needs of American Indians.

HISTORY OF PROGRAM:
Nils E. Hasselberg was an individual with a high level of interest in American Indians and in 1969, declared in his last will and testament that his estate be used to set up the Nils E. Hasselberg Indian Scholarship. The purpose of the program as stated in the will, is to promote the education American Indian students attending college or a university in the State of California. Mr. Hasselberg's wish for the Scholarship program was carried out in 1978, following his death. Since that time, awards have been made annually.
YEAR PROGRAM STARTED: 1978
ELIGIBILITY:
Applicants must be of American Indian descent, reside in the State of California, and be accepted to a college or university in California. All applicants will be screened in terms of their academic ability, motivation, initiative, financial need and active participation in the Indian community.
College students who are awarded this Scholarship must be full-time students carrying 12 units, or 8 units for Graduate Students, and maintain a 2.0 (C) grade point average.
FINANCIAL DATA:
The Scholarship is designed to provide financial support to pay actual expenses related to receiving a higher education. (Tuition, room and board, textbooks, etc.)
